Working as a Voice-Over Designer

A porcelain black panther facing a light blue furry microphone on its left side. Orange letters in the middle spell out Raawr!! In the corner is a purple and orange logo that reads Slice of Life.

Megaphones, microphones, and never without his headphones – we follow David around for a day!

How do you work with dialogue in video games? Does one person grab a microphone and put on different accents, or is it all AI these days? At Liquid Swords, neither of those is true! We are lucky enough to have a dedicated Voice-Over Designer in our team, who took some time out of his busy schedule in the sound booth to walk us through a typical day.

Getting to collaborate with pretty much everyone in the office. I don’t feel stuck in a bubble of my own small team within the team. I also get to work with what is, in my opinion, the most poignant and emotionally important part of a game – the voices and characters, as well as the actors that portray them. They’re what drive a narrative game forward, and they convey so much more than the words they utter, which always makes me emotional. I mean, I get to cry (happy tears) during work hours!

Either that I make all the voices myself or that I alone choose the voice cast of the game. Also that I understand every bit of game development. Spoilers, I don’t, and this is the case for most of us, but don’t tell anyone I said that.

First and foremost, my colleagues! I found some of my best friends at Liquid Swords. We work very well together and often hang out outside of work hours. Second, I get to work on a project that I’m passionate about, and I don’t take that for granted. I’m a very privileged person!

Thank you, David, for sharing your day with us!
